چکیده
GOLDSTEIN, LEON. Renal ammonia and acid excretion in infant rats. Am. J Physiol. 218(5) : 1394-l 398. 1970.-The rate of ammonia excretion in infant rats (9-14 days old) was approximately two-thirds the adult level. Excretion of titratable acid (TA) was approximately one-third that of adult rats until 14 days after birth. Between 14 and 21 days after birth, the rates of excretion of ammonia and TA increased to levels exceeding those of adult rats. The response of ammonia excretion to administration of an acid load (NH&l) was significantly lower in infant rats than in adults. The ability to respond in a manner quantitatively similar to adults developed between 14 and 21 days after birth. The percent increase in ammonia excretion after repeated (2-3 days) administration of NH&l was similar (500-6007,) in infant and adult rats. The absolute increase in ammonia excretion in infants was two-thirds that of adults. Deoxycorticosterone acetate administration had no effect on the response of the infant kidney to an acid load.

Renal glutaminase adaptation and ammonia excretion in infant rats.
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the role of enzyme adaptation in the response of ammonia excretion to acidosis in developing rats. The response of renal ammonia excretion was low in infant rats (7-12 days old) following administration of a single dose of acidifying salt (5 mmol NH4CL/kg). However, repeated administration (2 times daily) of the salt increased ammonia excretion...
متن کاملEffects of chronic lithium administration on renal acid excretion in humans and rats
Lithium therapy's most common side effects affecting the kidney are nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) and chronic kidney disease. Lithium may also induce a distal renal tubular acidosis. This study investigated the effect of chronic lithium exposure on renal acid-base homeostasis, with emphasis on ammonia and citrate excretion. We compared 11 individuals on long-term lithium therapy with six...
متن کاملCitrate therapy for polycystic kidney disease in rats.
BACKGROUND Few treatments are available to slow the progression to renal failure in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD). In an animal model of PKD, the male heterozygous Han:SPRD rat, intake of a solution of potassium citrate plus citric acid (KCitr) from age one to three months prevented a decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The present study tested whether this benefic...
متن کاملEffect of reduced renal mass on renal ammonia transporter family, Rh C glycoprotein and Rh B glycoprotein, expression.
Kidneys can maintain acid-base homeostasis, despite reduced renal mass, through adaptive changes in net acid excretion, of which ammonia excretion is the predominant component. The present study examines whether these adaptations are associated with changes in the ammonia transporter family members, Rh B glycoprotein (Rhbg) and Rh C glycoprotein (Rhcg). We used normal Sprague-Dawley rats and a ...

A response similar to that observed in adults appeared between 14 and 16 days after birth. General functional differentiation of the nephron, judged by the ability of isolated...
